How does an IID work?

An IID is roughly the size of a cell phone and functions as a breathalyzer which is connected to the steering column of your car. Even if you provide a clean sample with which to start your car, your IID will require random samples between 5-15 minutes after starting your engine and roughly every 45 minutes afterwards.

IIDs are designed to make sure you have not been drinking before driving by:

  • Requiring a specific breath patter while providing your sample
  • Having a very short cord which cannot reach the passengers or back seats
  • Requiring random samples while driving
  • Criminalizing asking others to provide a sample in lieu of yours

Further, the IID detects and records attempts to disconnect or tamper with the device, each time the engine stops and starts, and the results of all breath tests.

If a judge orders you to install an IID for your first DUI conviction, you may be forced to drive with one for five months. A second conviction can result in one year of having an IID in your vehicle while a third DUI can bring a two-year requirement.
